Jono Fleming is never not redecorating. While pottering around during lockdown earlier this year, and invariably thinking about ways to restyle his house, he realised he wanted some small-scale, vintage artworks that wouldn’t cost him an arm and a leg. The artworks he wanted were not dissimilar to the dusty framed pieces you might find at an op-shop, but his search for them proved fruitless. So, he set about making them himself!

‘I wanted a collection of art that felt classic but could work in a modern home and across a variety of styles,’ he explains. ‘It needed to be versatile.’

So he contacted artist and illustrator Rachel Stevens to be his collaboration partner. Though Rachel is a multimedia artist who also works with watercolours and inks, Jono was particularly interested in exploring her digital art for Palette; namely, her ability to create painterly images with large, textured brushstrokes on a digital canvas.

Armed with a brief and some of Jono’s moodboards, Rachel created an original series of moody still-lifes and pastel landscapes. Cross-sections of pomegranates, melons scattered across an indigo tablescape, a dusty pink sky over rolling green hills; you can hardly tell that Rachel created each of these compositions without a paintbrush!

Each artworks is printed on a polycotton canvas, stretched and framed in a lime-washed timber float frame. Each print is available in an edition of 100, priced between $165-$260, and can be bought as single pieces or as part of a pack (did someone say ‘salon wall’…?).

‘With Palette, I’m offering a way to buy art at an entry-level price point’ says Jono. ‘Affordable art can still be a unique, special and personal experience for the owner.’
